Qarmout, Dalal George (Um El Lewis) age 89 of Newton, NJ passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Tuesday April 9, 2024 at Morristown Medical Center following a brief illness. Born and raised in Jaffa Palestine, she had also resided in Ramallah Palestine and Amman Jordan before coming to the United States in 1974. Arriving first in California, Dalal relocated to New Jersey and settling in Newton in 1982.

Daughter of the late Ibrahim Batshon and Zaghlula Qarmout, Dalal was a baker for many years with the family business G & S Deli in Newton. A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend, Dalal was absolutely the family matriarch. Devout to her faith, she was an active member of the Arabic Baptist Church.

Dalal’s passion was her family, and taking an active part in all their lives. She enjoyed cooking especially for her family. She remained vigilant even in the final days from her hospital bed, she was making sure her family was well taken care of and organized.

Mrs. Qarmout was predeceased by her beloved husband George J. Qarmout in 1995 as well as her brothers Khalil, Mousa, Hanna and Nasser Batshon and her step-mother Souraya Ibrahim Batshon. Survivors include her sons Lewis and his wife Sofia Qarmout, Elias, and his wife Hind Qarmout, Albert and his wife Sana Quarmout, Fadel Quarmout, Bader and his wife Jenniffer Qarmout and Anwar and his wife Suhair Qarmout, her daughters Laila and her husband Suleiman Qarmout, Nawal Frangieh, and Hiam and her husband Fadi Frangieh. Also surviving are her brother Salim Batshon, her sisters Faiza Awwad and Georgette Hinn as well as her thirty-four grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday April 13, 2024 at 10 AM in the Faith Baptist Church #121 Sparta Ave. Sparta, NJ 07871. Interment will follow in the Newton Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home #156 Main Street (Rt. 206) Newton, NJ 07860. In lieu of flowers please donate to www.ArabicChristianChurch.org.
