Joan Sabol Tirpack of Mantoloking, NJ died peacefully at home on October 30, 2015 at the age of 87. A lifelong New Jersey resident, Joan was born on July 27, 1928 in Bayonne and lived in Elizabeth, Union and Atlantic Highlands. She permanently moved to her secondary home in Mantoloking in 1996, and spent the remainder of her life at one of her favorite parts of the Garden State — the Jersey Shore.

The daughter of the late John J. and Marie Sabol, Joan had an incredible work ethic and an esteemed career. She began working as a lab tech at the Esso Bayway Refinery at age 16 and continued with Exxon for over 40 years, retiring as a Human Resources Executive at the Rockefeller Center Exxon location in Manhattan.

Joan had a deep and lifelong love for world travel, both for herself and her family. She organized and joyfully completed countless trips with her children and grandchildren. A devoted mother, Joan was heavily involved in her family’s extracurricular activities including swimming, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, music and dance events, football and more.

Sticking with her “family first” motto, she held dinners on all days of the week for immediate and extended family, and she lovingly held in-home caregiving for sick and elderly family members. Joan was not just a mother to her biological children; many of her “nieces” and “nephews” consider themselves raised by “Aunt Joan.”

With a deep and reverent faith, Joan was active in the Holy Rosary Society in every church she had attended, and she and her husband were founding members of the Holy Spirit Church in Union, NJ. She had a great love for education, and enrolled in history, music, theater and literature courses at local colleges throughout her life.

Joan was also a very generous and giving person, having donated to a myriad of organizations throughout her life. The diversity of her giving includes the Papermill Playhouse, Tulane University, Smile Train, and St. Anthony’s Basketball Team in Jersey City.

A loving mother, grandmother, and aunt, Joan was predeceased by her loving husband of 62 years Edward; and her brother John F. Sabol. She is survived by her children Dr. Edward M. Tirpack and his wife Laura of Sparta, Janice Tirpack of Mantoloking, and Dr. Jill Tirpack and her husband Harry Smith of Hoover, AL; as well as her brother Ronald A. Sabol. Also surviving are her nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation for family and friends will be held Monday, November 23rd, 2015 from 10 to 11 AM, immediately followed by Mass at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, 751 Main Avenue Bay Head, New Jersey. Entombment will follow in the St. Catherine’s Mausoleum, 1100 W Chicago Blvd, Sea Girt, NJ 08750.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Joan’s name to the Downeyside Adoption Services C/O Sacred Heart RC Church www.downeyside.org or Boys Town http://www.boystown.org
