In Memoriam: Margaret “Peggy” Catherine Breining Siggillino
On June 28, 2019 Margaret “Peggy” Catherine Breining Siggillino, aged 82, passed from this life into eternal rest. An unrelenting optimist, Peggy forged ahead despite many medical challenges and surgeries mostly due to contracting polio as a teen. Peggy completed nursing school at the School of Nursing of Long Island College Hospital at the top of her class. She provided great support to her husband, the late Dr. Joseph Siggillino, throughout their 54-year marriage.
Peggy had a very active mind and was always learning new things. She was a talented cook and hosted many gatherings for her extended family. She had a passion for gift-giving, all kinds of handicrafts, and insightful conversations over board games. Peggy was an avid reader and enjoyed all kinds of fiction, historical books and pop culture.
As the hub of her family, Peggy kept everybody informed and enjoyed hearing about the activities of her children and six grandchildren. She openly shared her knowledge of sewing, knitting and cooking. Her daughters will always remember her as an intrepid “Jill of all trades,” handling any kind of home repair or project!
Peggy encouraged her four daughters to be strong and “not be afraid to drive on the expressway.” She encouraged them to be curious and later in life she focused on teaching them to be kind. She had a great love of animals and gave to many charities. She was an adult literacy volunteer with the New York Public Library for 10 years. She was an active member of the New York City Church of Christ in Staten Island and northern New Jersey and shared her gift of hospitality by hosting Bible Talks and spiritual book clubs.
Peggy was a bright light in the world and she will be greatly missed and greatly remembered. She leaves behind her daughters and their families, Luci Saltos and her husband Rafael, Joanna Siggillino and her husband David Jones, Laurie Broussard and former husband Rob Broussard, and youngest daughter Margaret “Margie” Siggillino, along with her six grandchildren, Cristina and Sara Saltos, Richard and Thomas Siggillino, and Keith and Phoebe Broussard.
Peggy also leaves behind her loving brother and sister-in-law Clifford and Christine Breining as well as her sister in law Jean Caltabilota and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law Bruce and Rosemarie Breining, brother and sister-in-law’s Russell and Marie Coniglio, Joseph and Rose DeMatteo, and Anthony Caltabilota, along with beloved niece Linda Allan.
A memorial service celebrating Peggy’s life will take place on Saturday, July 27th at 11:30 a.m. The location is Bristol Glen, UMC, #200 Bristol Glen Drive in Newton, New Jersey. Please enter through the main entrance to attend the service in the facility’s Town Hall.
