William (Bill) E. Schmidt Jr., 69, of Stillwater, NJ passed away May 10, 2013
at Newton Memorial Hospital in Newton following a brief illness. Bill was born September 14, 1943 in Orange, New Jersey and lived in Morris County before settling in Stillwater.

He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1964 and served in the Dominican Republic and a tour in Vietnam, where his actions earned him the following awards and decorations, the most notable being the Bronze Star with Combat “V,” as well as a Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation with 1 bronze star, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Dominican Republic), Vietnam Service Medal with 2 bronze stars, Republic of Vietnam Meritorius Unit Citation (Gallantry Cross Medal Color with Palm), Republic of Vietnam Meritorius Unit Citation (Civil Actions Medal 1st Class Color with Palm), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Rifle Marksman Badge, and Pistol Sharpshooter Badge. Bill’s dedication to his country and the USMC was matched only by his dedication to his family and friends.

He was predeceased by his father William, mother Ann Margaret (nee McHugh), brother Robert and sister Marta Badyk. Bill spent his career in the transportation industry, most recently with Quickrete in Mt. Olive, NJ. Bill is survived by wife Janice (nee Crider), daughter Kristine (Lawrenceville), two sons and their fiancees, William and Marie, Michael and Melanie (all of Stillwater), brother Francis “FJ” (New York City), 7 grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces.

The viewing will be Tuesday May 14th from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home in Newton. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10:00 am at Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home, followed by a 2:30 pm chapel service and burial with military honors in Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ. Arrangements are under the direction of Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home 156 Main Street, Newton, NJ 07860. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill’s honor may be made to the Northern New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery, NNJVMC, PO Box 463, Vernon, NJ 07462 (, an endeavor about which Bill was passionate.
