Scherer, Frederick W.A. age 79 of Byram Twp., NJ passed away peacefully on Sunday September 17, 2017 at the Newton Medical Center following a long illness. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Frederick had also resided in New City and Monsey, NY before ultimately moving to Byram Twp. in 1978.

Son of the late William A. and Helen (Makohon) Scherer, Frederick graduated from the Brooklyn Technical High School, class of 1956. Immediately following high school, he went to work for American Telephone & Telegraph Co. as an Equipment Technician. He took time off in the early part of his career to proudly serve his country as a Communications Specialist in the United States Army from 1961-1963. Upon his return from service, he resumed his employment with AT&T and his education, pursuing a technical degree in Engineering Science.

Mr. Scherer had a long career with AT&T that spanned over 50 years. He retired as a Staff Manager and his career highlights include major groundwork for technological improvements in data com, telecommunications, and high speed internet. He was most proud of his work on AT&T’s build out of the IT Common Backbone, the Information Super Highway for North America, and the World Wide Web.

A long time parishioner of the Good Shepherd R.C. Church in Andover, Frederick was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was very active with his sons throughout the years and volunteered his time to multiple youth organizations. Fred served locally in the Boy Scouts as a Unit Commissioner, and was a dedicated volunteer in Little League Baseball as well. He served as a Team Manager, League Commissioner and League Vice President in Monsey, NY and later in Byram Twp. served as a Team Manager and Coach with Hobb Engler Little League. He was also a lifelong classic car enthusiast, and a proud member of the Edsel Owners Club of America.

Frederick was pre deceased by his beloved wife Kathleen (O’Connor) Scherer in 2010. Survivors include his sons Kenneth P. and his wife Shannon M., Timothy F. and his wife RoseAnn, and John V. and his wife Amanda J. Scherer, his grandchildren Ethan H. Scherer and Jerle C. Steup, as well as his sister Christina and her husband Bill Herlihey.

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday September 26, 2017 at 10:00 AM in the Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church #48 Tranquility Rd. (Rt. 517) Andover, NJ. Entombment will immediately follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery Newton, NJ. Visitation will be Monday September 25th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM in the Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home #156 Main St. (Rt. 206) Newton, NJ.
