Opperman, Valentine J. age 94 of Montague, NJ passed away peacefully at his home on Monday August 10, 2020 following a brief illness. Family members were at his bedside. A native New Yorker, Valentine was born and raised in Manhattan. He later resided for many years in Ridgefield Park, NJ before moving to Sussex County in 1993.

Valentine, called Val by family and friends proudly served in the United States Navy as a gunnery mate aboard the LST 777 during WWII. He then had a long career working in the supermarket industry until his retirement. A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Val enjoyed spending time with his family most of all. Val was a devout Catholic and contributed to many needy causes. He also was an avid sports enthusiast and a loyal Giants football fan.

Val now joins his beloved wife Mary M. (nee Carolan) who departed this life in 1994. He is survived in life by his children Kathleen, Margaret, Patrick, Thomas and Rosemarie. His daughters –in-law, Sioban, Maura, and Yesenia and son-in-law Jaime. He is also survived by grandchildren Jonathan and Mark, Annmarie, Elizabeth, Caitlin and Maria Catalina, Darcy and Kerry as well as great-grandchildren Mackenzie, Savannah, Nate and Brad.

Arrangements are being handled by the Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home #156 Main St. (Rt. 206) Newton, NJ. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday August 15, 2020 at 11:00 AM in the Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church 48 Tranquility Rd. Andover, NJ. In lieu of flowers, Val’s family asks that donations be made to charities of choice. Online condolences may be offered through www.iliff-ruggierofuneralhome.com
