Betty Ehrengart Gassman, age 90 of Sparta, NJ passed away peacefully Thursday, July 24th, 2014 at Newton Medical Center. The only daughter of the late Charles D. and Marien V. (Trezise) Ehrengart, Betty was a founding member of Lake Mohawk.

In the 1940’s Betty was a Pan Am stewardess and nurse, but she will be remembered most for her devotion, skill and creativity teaching kindergarten and other grades from 1965-1986 at Helen Morgan School in Sparta. More than 1000 children got their first wonder-filled taste of school in her classroom where she taught both academics and compassion. Active in her community, Betty served during holidays at Manna House Soup Kitchen in Newton. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and the Sparta Methodist Church.

Predeceased by two sons, Charles Thomas and Gregg Robert Gassman, Betty is survived by her daughter Juliet Limmer of Indian Land, SC and her son Mace Gassman of Hopatcong, NJ, as well as four loving grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Friends, family, former colleagues and students are invited to a celebratory service on Saturday, August 16th at 2 p.m. at Sparta United Methodist Church, 71 Sparta Avenue. Burial arrangements are private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lakeland Animal Haven, P.O.
