Atchison, Walter S. age 104 of Newton passed away Saturday May 1, 2021 at Bristol Glenn, Newton, NJ. Born and raised in West Orange, he grew up and lived many years in the Oranges and Newark. Walter had also resided in East Hanover, Ringoes, Flemington and Toms River for many years before moving to Newton in 2015.

Son of the late Samuel and Ellen (nee McCann) Atchison, Walter proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII. His military service had him in intensive active duty throughout Europe, England, Scotland, Central France, Normandy and Rhineland. For his honorable service, Walter received the Good Conduct Medal, The Europe, African-Middle Western East-ern Campaign Medal with Bronze Star, The World War Victory Medal as well as a Presidential Citation.

Upon his return home, Walter began working at the Pabst/Hoffman Brewery, later the Ballantine Brewery and ultimately Budweiser where he worked until his retirement in 1982. As a young man during the depression, Walter worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps as well as a caddy for the Crestmont Country Club West Orange. There he served as caddy for Babe Ruth. Throughout his days at the Club, he met several celebrities such as Tony Pastor, Adolph Menjou and Spencer Tracy.

A life member of the VFW Post #9503 Toms River, NJ he was also a member of the Newton VFW Post #5360 As well as the Newton American Legion Post #86. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Gambler Ridge Golf Club as well as the Cream Ridge NJ League and the Lacy Golf Association where he consistently shot 77, won straightest drives and closest to the pin.

Walter was predeceased by his daughters Johanna Robinson and Margaret Guardino, his three grandchildren Scott Robinson, Lori Robinson Rebik and Roger Robinson, his sister Ellen O’Sullivan as well as his companion Donna Crowley and his ex-wife Joan Atchison. Survivors include his daughters Gail Theresa and husband Jeffrey Muller and Donna Marie and husband Kenneth Izzo, his son Walter Louis and his wife Denise Atchison as well as his fifteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren and fourteen great great grandchildren. Walter is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Friday May 21, 2021 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM in the Iliff-Ruggiero Funer-al Home #156 Main Street (Rt. 206) Newton, NJ 07860. Military Honors will be held Friday evening at 7:15 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday May 22, 2021 at 10 AM in the Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Church #24 Halsted Street Newton, NJ 07860. Private Interment in the Brig. Gen Willaim C. Doyal Veterans Cemetery Browns Mills, NJ will follow. Online condolences through www.iliff-ruggierofuneralhome.com
