John R. Devaney

Devaney, John R. age 88 of Newton, NJ died Sunday November 29th, 2009 in Andover, NJ following a long illness. Born and raised in Butler, NJ he has resided in Manchester Twp. and Hamburg, NJ for many years before moving to Newton three years ago. Son of the late John and Annie (Dilzer) Devaney, John had served as a Sgt in the US Army during WWII. During his military service, Mr. Devaney was trained in Teletype and Telecommunications, leading to his nearly forty year career with Bell Telephone in Paterson, NJ. A founding member of the VFW Post #8096 and the Fire Dept. of Butler, John was an avid Musician and Drummer, playing many years in a band. A long time parishioner of the St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church in Butler, John was pre deceased by his wife Jeanne (Adams) Devaney in 2002. Survivors include his son Robert A. Devaney of Lake Havasu, AZ, his daughters Bonnie and husband Chuck Klim of Newton, and Terry Brace of Rhode Island. His brothers Harold and John of South Carolina and Donald of Toms River, NJ, his sister Eileen Mungenast, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.   

Graveside Services in the Brigadier Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery Arnytown, NJ are private and under the direction of the Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home, 156 Main Street (Route 206) Newton, NJ.
