The Dash

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on his tombstone
From the beginning to the end.
He noted that first came the date of his birth
And spoke of the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time
That he spent alive on earth
And now only those who loved him
Know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own,
The cars, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard;
Are there things youâ??d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough

And always try to understand
The way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger

I remember taking care of AJ as one of his many nurses. He was the quiet warrior. Always had a smile and never saw him display any emotions other than that warm smile. Through a tough battle, he never seemed defeated and although his earthly body succumbed to this unknown entity called cancer and is no longer here, his spirit will live on in those whom he has touched with his gentle strength, love, and friendship.

AJ and I were best friends from age 6 through high school. Every childhood memory I have, AJ was a part of: walking to school together, riding bikes, making our tree fort and go-carts, playing football, baseball, street hockey, basketball, going sledding, skiing, delivering his papers, driving to school every day. A thought does not come to mind where AJ wasn't in my life. We laughed, we fought, we hugged, we cried together. We were brothers. AJ will always have a place in my heart.

AJ was a good friend and co-captain of the wrestling team in high school. He taught me that anyone can improve exponentially when their mind was set on accomplishing a goal. He went from a barely varsity wrestler his freshmen year to a state champion and co-captain overnight. This was a major lesson for me at that time in my life although I never did tell him. I hope he knows the influence he provided to me and many other teammates and friends. We had many good times outside of school as friends and I am honored to say I knew AJ. I remember a conversation I had with AJ. It was the enthusiastic attitude AJ had in telling me how he had trained his first dog "Maxine". AJ related to me his patience and dedication in his method of training the dog, which certainly paid off, because the dog acted almost human. By the time i was old enough to really interact and have real conversations with aj, he was already off doing his own things and living life to its fullest. I really only got a few chances to even spend time with him but each time i remember about him it always made me smile. RIP aj love you

Every memory I have of AJ just makes me smile. I regret that we lost touch over the last few years but that will never diminish the great times we had. AJ was a good man, a good friend, and he will be missed. Rest in Peace Bro... Ryan

I am deeply saddened to lose a great friend. My wife Kim and I loved AJ like a brother and shared many of our lives' best moments with him. From life with him at TKE through to current times AJ was always one of our favorite people to see and be around. Nobody had a better smile or could just speak the plain truth about things than AJ. I am so grateful he got to meet and know my son Ryan and daughter Emma. And to know he also made an impact on Ryan in such a positive way will always make me smile when I think about him. To all of those who in some way suffered along with him and aided him in his battle, you are all to be thanked for your remarkable efforts. AJ came into our lives about two years ago but we consider that short time as a blessing for us. He made our daughter Priya so happy and wished it had gone on.
